Koi fish are popular all over the world, but perhaps most loved in Japan where they symbolise love, good luck, career success and wealth. Here are some things you might not know about this colourful kind of fish:
1. Koi can live to 100
Whilst the average lifespan for a Koi is somewhere between 25 to 30 years old, some can live to more than a century if they are kept in perfect conditions. The biggest Koi can grow to almost one metre long too!
2. Water temperature is important
Good conditions include an ideal water temperature of between 15°C to 25°C. It’s also important that there is enough oxygen in the water and a good source of food. Koi eat other fish and their eggs as well as plants.
3. Badgers are bad news
Koi fish can be attacked by lots of different animals. Depending on which country they are in and whereabouts the pond is, predators include badgers as well as dogs, cats, otters and even snakes.
4. Colourful Koi
Koi are famous for their colourings. As well as red and yellow, they can also be white, cream, blue or black depending on the variety they are. The Tancho variety is white with one red dot on its head and is very popular in Japan.
5. Koi can get sunburnt
As incredible as it sounds, Koi can suffer from sunburn! It occurs if the pond they are in does not have enough shade. Ouch!
