A new study by scientists from the University of Plymouth and the University of Exeter has found that watching fish and other marine creatures can be good for your health. The research, which was carried out in partnership with the National Marine Aquarium, sought to monitor changes in physical being and mental health after watching marine life.
People who took part in the study had their heart rate and blood pressure taken before and after looking at fish and other marine creatures at the centre. The team of researchers found that there was a reduction in both of these measures after watching the animals, and that the higher the number of fish in the tank, the more positive the mood which was reported.
The lead scientist on the project, Deborah Cracknell has emphasised the importance of the study stating, “fish tanks and displays are often associated with attempts at calming patients in doctors' surgeries and dental waiting rooms. This study has, provided robust evidence that 'doses' of exposure to underwater settings could actually have a positive impact on people's wellbeing."
This suggests that aquariums can be used across a number of settings to help people feel more calm and relaxed. As well as the home, aquariums are popular in many different environments for this reason including medical centres, entrances to busy companies, open plan workplaces, board rooms and schools.
